TURKANA EXPEDITION(8 DAYS)

Day 1: Nairobi – Samburu Reserve. 

You will depart from your hotel in Nairobi after breakfast at 0700 hrs and head to Samburu National Reserve, arriving by lunch at the camp. On your way, you will see the magnificent countryside of the central highlands later dropping down to the semi-arid zone of Samburu. On a clear day you will see the tallest mountain in Kenya and second tallest in Africa at a height of 5,195m above sea level.

After check-in, you will have lunch and enjoy your afternoon siesta. Game drive will commence at 1600 hrs until 1830 hrs. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 2: Samburu Reserve.

You may choose to have an early morning game drive and later come back for breakfast at the lodge. Spend your morning and afternoon at leisure at the camp. 1600 hrs you will again have another afternoon drive within the reserve.

At Samburu, you will have the chance to sight the special five which are the Besia Oryx, Gerenuk, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe and the Gravy Zebra.

Day 3: Samburu – Loiyangalani.

You will have an early breakfast and thereafter proceed to exit the reserve as you head to Loiyangalani town which is in Turkana County and lies at the shores of Lake Turkana. You will arrive for late lunch and thereafter have rest. In the afternoon you will visit one of the local tribes that resides near the lake. You will then return to the hotel for your dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Loiyangalani.

After breakfast you will then proceed with the visit of the local tribes within the town. Lake Turkana hosts around four tribes namely; the Elmolo (smallest tribe), Samburu, Turkana and Rendile. Lunch, dinner and overnight will be at the hotel.

Day 5: Loiyangalani – Maralal.

After breakfast you will depart with packed lunch which you will have on your way to Maralal town. This day you will just relax around the hotel after the long drive. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 6: Maralal – Lake Bogoria.

You will depart early after enjoying your breakfast, carrying lunch box which you will have on the way as you head to Lake Bogoria. On the way you will stop over to visit the Pokot tribe and may be the Njemps too at Lake Baringo. Arriving at the lodge for check-in then have a cup of the Kenyan tea or coffee. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 7: Lake Bogoria – Lake Nakuru.

After breakfast you may proceed to Lake Bogoria Reserve to view the huge numbers of flamingos and if time permits you may also see the hot springs and geysers on the lower side of the lake. You will then proceed to Lake Nakuru Nation Park, arriving for lunch at the hotel. At 1600hrs you will enjoy game viewing around the lake where you will sight the vast aquatic birds, rhinos, reticulated giraffe, lions and many more wildlife. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 8: Lake Nakuru – Nairobi.

To wind up your safari you may decide to visit the Daphne Wildlife Trust where you will see the baby elephants at the orphanage, visit the giraffe center and the Karen Blixen Museum (All this is optional). After the journey you will stop over for lunch at the famous Carnivore Restaurant then you will be dropped off at your hotel in Nairobi or at the airport to board your flight.

After your breakfast you will exit the reserve and head to Marsabit town, arriving for lunch at the hotel. In the afternoon you will pay a visit at the Marsabit National Park where you may get a chance to see a variety of mammals, birds, beautiful ambiance of the densely rain forest and the crater lakes. Dinner and overnight will be at the lodge.

Day 4: Marsabit – North Horr.

You will depart early after breakfast from your hotel, pass through Chalbi Desert (‘bare and salty’ in Gabbra). This desert is situated near the border with Ethopia. Depending with the rain season you may have the chance to see the Gabbra tribe men as they fetch water for their livestock at the ‘singing wells’. You will have light lunch and proceed with the drive to North Horr and by good chance you may see the huge herd of camels as they cross the desert ‘desert trains’.

You will arrive at North H orr late in the evening, refresh and enjoy dinner.

Day 5: North Horr – Sibiloi National Park.

Early in the morning you will have breakfast and immediately depart for Sibiloi National Park which is known as the ‘Cradle of mankind’ and was established for protection of wildlife and pale-ontological sites. You will have your lunch after arriving at Alia Bay House at the shore of lake Turkana(‘The Jade Sea’).

In the afternoon you will visit Mount Sibiloi where the remains of the petrified forest can be seen and sight wildlife near the lake.

Day 6: Sibiloi National Park.

After enjoying your breakfast you will drive to Koobi Fora Museum where the fossils of Australopithecus anamensis, Homo habilis, Homo erectus were found, though non-humanoid fossils are on display at the museum. The Dassanach tribe who are normadic and live within, might be seen depending on where they will have built their village.

You will also have the chance to visit the Elephant site, displaying elephant fossils dating 1.7 million years back and the Giant Tortoise site, displaying a fossil of an extinct tortoise dating 1.6 million years back. Dinner and overnight will be at Alia Bay House.

Day 7: Sibiloi – Loiyangalani.

After breakfast you will depart for Loiyangalani which is a town at the shore of Lake Turkana. You will have your lunch on your way to the town. You will check-in at the hotel late in the afternoon and thereafter you may enjoy a cold drink and freshen-up before embarking on visiting the local tribes. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
